Just to add to this,, ever since they stopped supporting their authentication servers. They had the choice of either locking people who'd legitimately purchased the software out, or simply giving it out for free from their website on the honour system. They made the right choice. CS2 is pretty old these days, but still miles ahead of GIMP and a lot of other software out there. It's still a great digital painting package, and considering how Adobe generally focuses on the non-painting parts of Photoshop when they add features, it's got a good chunk of what's available in the most current version. Some of the things Photoshop can do that Gimp can't are on the technical side of things. Gimp doesn't have native high bit depth channels yet, and doesn't natively support CMYK; those are two big barriers on the professional side of things that keep Photoshop on top. Some things, like the brush engine, are just better in Photoshop. That shouldn't come as any surprise; I started using Photoshop 2.0 back when I was in college and I'll be 44 in a couple of weeks. It's a very mature piece of software that's improved steadily with each release. If you've got a lot of years in with Photoshop, the stuff that it does better than Gimp is apparent right out of the gate, but if you don't have a lot of years in Photoshop you wouldn't know what the hell I was talking about or you'd think I was nitpicking. If you don't know page layout, you have no idea what you're missing, but as soon as you start really getting serious about it, you realize what you've been missing. It has a bit of a learning curve, but the brushes mesh really well with all the nuance of Wacom's pen sensors. You will get a ton of value with Painter and your drawing pad working in tandem.
